INDEPENDENT MP for Lyne Rob Oakeshott today encouraged prospective young players and volunteers to get involved in the new Midnight Basketball competition being run at the Taree Basketball Stadium.
Mr Oakeshott said he was very pleased to see the program getting underway in Taree.
“This is an excellent program and it’s great to see so much support from local organisations and businesses who have helped Greater Taree City Council get this competition off the ground.
“It has been a real community effort, including the lobbying which secured $20,000 from the Federal Attorney General last year, and from what I have seen of this program in Kempsey the rewards for the community will more than justify the hard work.”
With additional financial support from Midnight Basketball and sponsors including Bakers Choice, Quota and Live n Loud productions, the Midnight Basketball Community Committee has announced it will run its first Friday evening competition from May 6 to June 24.
“I encourage young people aged 12 to 18 to register as an opportunity to learn news skills and blow off steam in a competitive and challenging environment,” Mr Oakeshott said.
“This is also an opportunity for the Manning community to get involved as volunteers, helping with a range of jobs including driving, catering and scoring.
“More information is available by phoning the council’s youth services team on 6552 5715 or players can register online at www.midnightbasketball.org.au/taree,” Mr Oakeshott said.
